Title
Early medieval silver finger ring
Description
English: A medieval silver finger-ring, the bezel circular, with four small protruding lobes at the four corners, engraved with a diagonal cross within a circle. The engraved areas originally held niello. The shoulders are decorated with the head of a dragon or animal, and the hoop between the bezel and the dragons is engraved with ridges. The hoop is of D-shaped section.

Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of the finger-ring indicated a silver content of approximately 99% with some trace impurities. The actual silver content is likely to be lower than this.

The ring is not modern, in spite of its appearance. The condition of the silver indicates it has undergone chemical cleaning of an unsuitable type for an archaeological silver item. It is possible that there was a niello inlay on the bezel but this has largely been reduced to unattractive globules of silver. The surface composition of the ring has been changed by the cleaning.

The finger-ring dates to the 12th or early 13th century.
