Summary edit

Description
English: Simplified schematics of the early visual pathway of the cat from the retina to layer IV of the primary visual cortex (V1). A stimulus is focussed onto the retina through the cornea and lens, is sampled by the receptive fields of retinal ganglion cells and transmitted to the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). LGN neurons project to stellate cells in layer IV of V1, whose responses are orientation tuned. Orientation tuning varies smoothly across the cortical surface.
