collided andthrew the drivers out, and to avoid the mix-up I had tobring him to a complete stop, and thereby came verynear being distanced, and to get inside the flag he wascompelled to trot the last three-quarters of the mile atsuch a terrific gait that he was unable to do himselfjustice in the next heats. I think he trotted themiddle half of that heat in 1.02. His best race was atNew York, which he won, in straight heats, in 2.07,2.07, and 2.08. This horse is now in perfect conditionand what he may accomplish in the future I hardlydare hazard an opinion. That he is a great horsethere can be no question. Whether he will be thegreatest time alone can disclose. But measured bythe records of one seasons racing, he is the greatesttrotting race horse I have ever driven ; and if HiramWoodruff were now living and compared his racerecord of 2.07 as a five-year-old with the trial mile ofDexter in 2.231^ as a six-year-old, is it not probablethat he would again exclaim, ** Oh, what a horse! 100

OnO MR. C. J. HAMLIN says that when he was ayoung man he used to attend dancing parties, and was very fond of dancing with a younglady that was a good dancer, but he soon found that itadded much to his enjoyment to dance with one thatwas beautiful to look upon as well as a good dancer;and that when he commenced to breed trotters, havingin mind his experience in the gay whirl of his giddydays, he determined, if possible, to combine beautywith speed in the animals he should produce, and hehas consistently adhered to that theory during all thelong years he has been engaged in the business. The black stallion Dare Devil is a product of this sys-tem of breeding, and is one of the most beautiful horsesever seen upon the race track or in the show ring.He is a coal black, with three white ankles, a smallstar, and snip foaled June i, 1893, sired by Mam-brino King, dam Mercedes by Chimes. His first racewas at Detroit, when he was four years old, in whichhe won the last three of four heats in 2.1
