I must admit to remaining unconvinced by the Page\Park extension of 2007 - it just doesn't seem to respond to the main theatre block, which I absolutely love. What is the protruding roof thing for? It appeared to be covering an extremely grand garden furniture store when we visited. Perhaps on a few summer days for conferences and the like it may prove its worth, but it seemed to me that despite all this extra volume, the (albeit extremely well-done) refurbished areas of the original theatre spaces continue to provide most of what the theatre, and its users, need. I mean with that classic LDN design, why did the extension need to shout so loudly? The strict perpendicular lines of the Page\Park extension appear clumsy next to the wonderful geometry of the main theatre block, and the moderately-up-market-office/retail-development palette of cladding materials strikes up no conversation whatsoever. Would such insensitivity been allowed on any other era of category A listed building? I suspect not. Nevertheless, I do quite like the twiddly sticky-uppy bits. Don't know what they're there for either mind, but I like them. And I admit that it was always intended to extend in this location. Dare I say it, might it have been more successful if LDN had designed the extension? I feel the final sentence of a letter from Colin MacInnes published in the Architects' Journal in January 2008 says it all: "It is good to see Eden Court Theatre reinvigorated with new facilities, but I feel rather sad that the inventive spirit of the original design seems to have been washed away in such a disappointing fashion." |
