Edith Mary MORTON. Staff Nurse NX35036 Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) attached to 2/5th Australian General Hospital. Born 21 February 1905 at Roxburgh New Zealand to James Michael and Harriet Morton, nee George. She resided her parents at 41 Quinton Road, Manly, suburb of Sydney New South Wales, her mother was her next of kin. Later family moved to Manley, Sydney, New South Wales. Her sister Mrs L McLean of 113 Woodland Street Balgowlah New South Wales became her next of kin on the death of their mother. Killed in a car accident in Eritrea, East Africa 16 December 1941 aged 36.

Notes from her service record. Enlisted aged 35 years at Victoria Barracks, Paddington, New South Wales. 17 July 1940. Posted to her unit, 5th Australian General Hospital attached to C.D.S. Showground, Sydney. 19 October 1940 embarked from Australia from Middle East on Troop Ship Queen Mary with 5th Australian General Hospital. 25 November 1940 disembarked at Greece and embarked Greece 10 April 1941 On the 4 August 1941 she was attached to 5th Australian General Hospital. Killed in a car accident in Eritrea, East Africa 16 December 1941 aged 36.

Court of inquiry held at Gura, Eritea on 17 December 1941 declares that:- (1) Staff Nurse Morton died on 16 December 1941 from injuries received in a motor accident on the night of the 15 December 1941. (2) Staff Nurse Morton was at the time on active service with the A.I.F. abroad. (3) Death was due to misadventure and that no claim is attributable to any person. At rest in Roman Catholic portion at 32nd British General Hospital (RAMC) Mai Haslar Eritrea. CWGC have Asmara War Cemetery, Eritrea, East Africa. She and many others are Included on the Nurses’ War Memorial Chapel in Westminster Abbey, London

She was issued with the following medals. 1939/25 Star. Africa Star. Defence Medal. War Medal. and Australia Service Medal.
