English: Seen on a sunny January 2023 morning is the Educational Unit of Jamestown, New York's Kidder Memorial United Methodist Church. Built in 1965 to a design by the Buffalo-based architectural practice of Shelgren, Patterson & Marzec, this Modernist-styled annex occupies the north end of the parcel, on the site of the former parish house which indeed was the original chapel built in 1907 by Samuel F. Kidder and moved here in 1919. Standing one story in height (though designed for the easy addition of as many as two additional floors if necessary), the flat-roofed building features the requisite sleek lines, smooth textures, and rectangular forms, but by far the most interesting element of its design is the deeply recessed entrance pavilion, faced in light-colored stone and shaded under a slanted canopy designed in imitation of a Classical pediment. A row of nine small stained glass panels, with geometric tracery matching that of the windows on the left side of the structure, is situated above a pair of modern-styled glass doors set off-center. The cornerstone for this new structure was laid in June 1964 in a ceremony officiated by the Rev. Dr. Glenn E. Donelson, superintendent of the Erie Conference of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, and was designed to contain eighteen Sunday school classrooms, a fellowship hall with a modern kitchen, and a small chapel. It was only one part of a multifaceted $200,000 construction project that also included a renovation, modernization, and interior expansion of the existing building.
