editDescriptionElephants in Stokeinteignhead - geograph.org.uk - 786171.jpg |
English: Elephants in Stokeinteignhead. This charming little wall plaque is on Forches Hill. My guess is that the cottage (shown in 786162) once housed a cutler, as the three elephants and three crossed swords are the chief components of the arms of the Worshipful Company of Cutlers. "The elephant is presumed to allude to the ivory employed in the work of hafting swords, knives and other weapons: a costly material only fit for the best of implements." (http://www.cutlerslondon.co.uk/history2.htm )
But of course it may not be in situ. |
