Summary: Photograph of Elsie Hill, standing in the back seat of an automobile that is parked at curb, speaking to a crowd of people (mostly men} standing on a sidewalk, on a street corner in St. Paul, Minn. Photograph published in The Suffragist, 4, no. 31 (July 29, 1916): 5. Captioned "Miss Elsie Hill Addressing a Street Meeting in St. Paul." According to the accompanying story (" Prohibition Party Adopts Iron-Clad Suffrage Plank") Elsie Hill represented the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage/Woman's Party at a Prohibition Party convention in St. Paul, July 19 and 20, 1916. The Prohibition Party endorsed as part of their plank the text of the Susan B. Anthony amendment (granting the right to vote to women). Elsie Hill of Norwalk, Conn., was educated at Vassar College and the daughter of a member of Congress. She became a national organizer for the NWP, and in August 1918, was sentenced to 15 days in District Jail for speaking at Lafayette Square meeting. In February 1919 she was sentenced to 8 days in Boston for participation in demonstration staged during Pres. Woodrow Wilson's appearance in that city.
