Emlaghfad Church ruins with body of church overgrown and impassable, Ballymote, County Sligo

Summary edit

Description
English: The church was founded by St. Colmcille in the 6th Century, and lies approximately 1.5km south of the rock at Ballymote just beyond the end of the Ballymore Heritage Trail and is a notably visible landmark from the railway and road below to the west. The 3 storey square tower remains intact and roofless with the entrance door on the west face. The main body of the church is also roofless and heavily overgrown with vegetation inside, attempts to clear it in 2010s being thwarted. The church is surrounded by star shape fortifications dating from about 1600 and was adopted by the Church of Ireland as a parish church circa 1750 then abandoned about 1830 when when a new church was constructed in Ballymote. It is possible a the root cause for failure to remove the vegetation is related to banshees or bats and a scholar do well to research Sligo's association with vampires and Bram and Charlotte Stoker.
