Summary edit

Description
English: Cuirassed statue of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Head made around 150 CE, torso made 50-80 CE. The statute and the head don't belong together. The head depicts Marcus Aurelius in his 2nd portrait type, which probably originated around 140 CE on the occasion of his appointment as a consul, and which superseded the body portrait remaining valid with slight modification until his accession to power in 161 CE. Acquired 1791 CE from Italy; the statue found near Tivoli, Italy. Marble. Altes Museum, Berlin.
