AN I \ I i:i;;();; A FLYING GLIMPSE OF ITALY I do, responded Doroth)^ I was ratherafraid that we were going into that fearful darkness.It will be delightful. The sun was sinking over the hills behind us aswe followed the road round the edge of the lapping-waters, passing through several small but very busyvillages crowded with people, whose sole occupationseemed to be fishing, and who accorded us a noisywelcome. Though Gaeta is renowned in history, itsaccommodation for unexpected visitors is miserablydeficient ; at least that was our experience. Thetown is beautifully situated with quaint harboursand cobbled streets, but the hotel was dirty and thefood bad, and spoilt our short stay in that celebratedlittle seaport. We left early next morning, return-ing over the same road round the beautiful bay.Towards Naples the whole sky was as black as ink,and a few miles further would bring us into the rainof ashes, so reluctantly we were forced to postponeour visit to Naples and Sicily, and ret
