Dürer erklärt hiermit auf der Tafelː "Bildnis des Erasmus von Rotterdam, von Albrecht Dürer nach seiner lebendigen Gestalt gezeichnet". Und auf Griechischː "Seine Schriften zeigen ein besseres Bild", was einer Aufforderung zum Lesen gleichkommt.
Erasmus Desiderius war die zentrale Figur im Humanismus. Das Bild zeigt den Schreibenden mit einem Barett und einem schweren Mantel in der Mode seiner Zeit. Er wurde zur zentralen Figur des Humanismus. Die Blumen stehen sinnbildlich für Demut und Bescheidenheit, trotz seiner Größe eine Charaktereigenschaft des Dargestellten.
