DescriptionEroding Architecture (3135416735).jpg |
This is a detail of one of the inner walls in the Temple of the Moon in Yeha, Tigray Region, northern Ethiopia. Archaeologists believe this wall was built over 2,500 years ago. Who knows when the roof was destroyed, but today the walls stand exposed to the elements. I was interested in the way the elements have eroded the wall's sandstone blocks. Near the top, where the stone is more exposed to wind and rain, the wall is beginning to resemble a natural stone outcropping. Toward the bottom, the blocks are in nearly pristine condition. The transition from one state to the other presents interesting visual patterns and rhythms. For more information about the Temple of the Moon, please refer to the description provided with the first photo in this series. |
