Description

St. Patrick's Church, Eskaheen, County Donegal, Ireland

English: Memorial plaque dedicated to Very Rev. William McLaughlin (1776–1856). He was the first parish priest of Ishkaheen during the period from 1811–36 and later 1848–56. (See Mary Newport et al: St. Patrick's Church Parish of Iskaheen and Upper Moville, 2003.) The inscription reads:
To the memory of THE VERY REV. WILLIAM MCLAUGHLIN who died on the Feast of our Lady of Mount Carmel 1856, in the 76th year of his age. He was curate in Derry five years, parish priest of Leck and Donagheady eleven, and thirty four years the beloved and respected pastor of this his native parish. In his holy and mortified life he was an ornament to his sacred order, while his labours in the ministry, extending over a period of half a century, were always characterized by the greatest zeal, and rarely surpassed in the Irish Church. His long and successful advocacy of the temperance movement has been productive of the best results to society, and gained for him the gratitude and esteem of every class in the community. To perpetuate the remembrance of his many virtues this monument was erected by the parishioners of Iskaheen, and his other numerous friends and admirers of all religious denominations.
