Description
English: This image, acquired by one of Copernicus' Sentinel-2 satellites on 9 October 2021, shows Palma de Mallorca in the Balearic Islands (Spain). The Balearic Islands are home to the Balearic Shearwater, one of Europe's most endangered bird species, according to results published on 14 October in the European Red List of Birds 2021. The study also includes other worrying findings for Europe's biodiversity. For example, one in five bird species are threatened with extinction due to large-scale land-use change, habitat loss, degradation of their breeding grounds, and climate change. Every day, the Copernicus Sentinel missions provide petabytes of open data useful for studying the state of nature around the world.
