Rather the most important of these was the king-dom of the Parthians in Persia. In Greece proper, many of the states maintained a kindof precarious independence, protected from one another bythe interference of Macedonia. Besides the single statesthere was a most interesting federal union of the Achaeancities, for mutual protection and the conduct of commonaffairs, which lasted until the coming of the Romans.
