Summary edit

Description

A pair of Eurostar trainsets at Paris Gare du Nord. I will take the right train to London Waterloo.

As the UK is not part of the Schengen Zone, Eurostar trains must use dedicated platforms. Coming in from the UK, French passport check was done at Waterloo before boarding the train. Now, leaving for the UK, I have to clear French and preliminary British passport check here at Gare du Nord, receiving a British landing card in the process, fill the landing card out in the train, and submit the landing card during the full passport check upon arrival at London Waterloo.

Eurostar uses dedicated trainsets that can split in half in case of in-tunnel emergencies. They are also able to use British third rail for power, a major consideration on trips to/from Waterloo (the current St. Pancras service eliminates that requirement). Eurostar trains have eighteen passenger carriages and stretch a quarter mile long; the only other TGV stretching that long is the KTX in South Korean service.

Railfans refer to Eurostar as British Rail Class 373, or TGV-TMST. The left one (3216) is owned by French national rail SNCF while the right one (3003) is owned by British Rail.
