Summary edit
DescriptionExchange National Bank Building, Olean, New York - 20210620.jpg |
English: The Exchange National Bank Building, 201 North Union Street at Laurens Street, Olean, New York, June 2021. Olean's NRHP-eligible commercial district contains two high-rise buildings that were once corporate headquarters of locally owned banks, and of them, the former Exchange National Bank certainly has the more interesting history from an architectural standpoint. The first two floors - everything up to and including the frieze engraved with the company's name and the modillion-bracketed cornice above it - dates to the building's initial opening to the public in August 1906. A resplendent exercise in neoclassicism it is, with a façade principally of cast iron punctuated by engaged columns (and, on the side elevation, pilaster strips) with stylized Ionic capitals. Originally, this portion of the building was topped with a handsome engaged pediment with still more ornate relief carvings and raking modillion rows on the sloped sides, but this was removed in 1920 when the top five stories were added. This section of the structure has a more minimalist aesthetic but is still plenty handsome, with the principal decorative element being the relief panels on the top floor whose dominant motif is the festoon. You'll also see scroll keystones adorning the tops of the windows on the top two floors, and a dentil row underneath the roofline. The Exchange National Bank was in business until 1992 - a surprisingly long run given the trend toward acquisitions and consolidations that characterized America's financial industry in the late 20th century - and the building is now a branch location of the Syracuse-based Community Bank N.A. |
