ATHETERIZATION OF THE URETHRAIX THE MARE. Restraint.—The same general directions as for passing thecatheter in the horse. Instruments.—Metallic or gum elastic catheter about twentycentimeters long. Technique.—The urethral opening is situated ten to fifteencentimeters from the entrance of the vulva, below a largevalve stretched transversely across the inferior wall of thatcavity at its entrance into the vagina. Conduct the index ofthe left hand to the opening by spreading the lips of the vulva;slip a catheter along the finger; engage it in the urethral canal *This method, described in human surgery, is superior to all others; ifwell executed it avoids stricture of the urethra.
