Description |
English: In 1909 Atlanta-born Anton Louis Delkin (1889-1974) arrived in Seattle from British Columbia with $40 cash and five barrels of peanuts. By 1918 Delkin, the "Chief Nut," was selling $1,350,000 worth of nuts per year through his company, The Nut House. After an attempt in the early 1920s to expand into additional cities, the board of trustees decided in 1923 to sell the company. By 1930 Delkin had moved with his family to Massachusetts to manage a confectionery factory. The Seattle branch of The Nut House, seen here, was located at 2240 First Avenue South and was equipped with facilities for blanching, cooking, and packing various kinds of nuts. The plant also manufactured chocolate-coated nuts, nut bars, and various candies and confections. The 2-story portion of the building seen here was originally built in 1907 by the John Morrell Company of Ottumwa, Iowa as a meat packing house. The Nut House relocated here from 911 Western Avenue in 1915, adding the 1-story portion in 1918 owned by Mrs. F.R. Rowell and designed by Edwin Houghton & sons.
