Description

Cold War era British Main Battle Tank Total production 4,423 The Mk13 Centurion was a Mk10 fitted with Infra-Red equipment and a ranging gun. This example was used by the Royal Engineers, where it was named “Hackett V.C.”. William Hackett was a Sapper in the 254th Tunnelling Company of the Corps of Royal Engineers. During World War I he was entombed with four others in a gallery owing to the explosion of an enemy mine. When a rescue party reached them he helped three men out of the hole but stayed behind with the fourth, who was seriously injured, and then the gallery collapsed. For giving his life for his comrade he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.” Armourgeddon Military Museum Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire, UK
