The place was occupied bya detachment of Colonel Frank Wolfords brigade,which was quickly driven out. Encamping thatevening some eight miles from Columbia, we couldhear all night the ringing of the axes near GreenRiver bridge, on the road from Columbia to Campbells-ville. Moore, de-liberately quitting the elaborate stockade erected nearthe bridge,—in which nine officers out of ten wouldhave remained, but where we could have shelled himinto surrender without losing a man ourselves,— se-lected one of the strongest natural positions I ever saw,and fortified it skilfully although simply. The GreenRiver makes here an immense horseshoe sweep, withthe bridge at the toe of the horseshoe; and more thana mile south of it was the point where Colonel Mooreelected to make his fight. The river there wound backso nearly upon its previous course that the peninsula,or neck, was scarcely a hundred yards wide. Thisnarrow neck was also very short, the river bendingalmost immediately to the west again.
