Its planeshave a span of forty-six feet. Cody won the BritishEmpire Michelin Cup by his flight of 187 miles overLaffans plain on the last day of 1910.

4(1 THE EVOLUTION OF FLIGHT The Air Post The carrying of intelligence with great rapidity fromone point to another when other means of transit areinterrupted is one of the obvious uses of the aeroplane,which would be of signal advantage in war, and may becapable of utilisation commercially at no distant datein countries where railway communication is as yetundeveloped. Already some exceedingly interestingtrials have taken place. On September 9, 1911,Gustav Hamel flew from Hendon to Windsor, carryingthe mails, in 12 minutes. The wind was behind himand he attained a speed of 105 miles an hour. Ovington in America, and Pecquet and Keith-Daviesin India, have also carried the mails and demonstratedthe practical utility of flight in this direction. Increased Safety of Aeroplanes Flight through the air to a height of thousands offeet above the earths surface is in itself so astonishinga performance that it has been taken for granted thataviation must always be an extremely dangerouspursuit.
