tendom. About 1514 Raphael was betrothed to Maria daBibiena, niece of Cardinal Bibiena, though it seemsthat he consented rather through condescension thaninclination to the alliance. The marriage was delayed,and the plans were put an end to by the death ofMaria. Tliere was a young girl named )\Iargheritawhom Raphael had always loved, and at his death heleft her richly provided for. At the time of his great-est activity, during his researches amongst the ruinsof Rome, he was seized with a violent fever, and afteran illness of two weel^s he died, at the age of thirty-eight. His Ijody was placed in the Pantheon near theplace on which is the inscription to the memory of hisbetrothed bride. Doubts were raised some years ago as to the precisespot where he was buried. Search was made in 1833,and Raphaels bones were found, the place agreeingexactly with the description given by Yasari. On the18th of October, in the same year, the relics were in-terred in the same spot, with great solemnities.

YITTORE CARPACCIO is an important Venetianpainter who labored during the early part of thesixteenth century. He is called the historical painterof the elder Venetian school, though he inclines to thefrenre style, introducing the daily life of the Venetiansof liis time into his pictures. He fills his backgroundswith landscai)e and architecture, displaying tapestriedhalls and lustrous robes, all characterized by a deep andpowerful coloring. He seems to aim not only at therepresentation of single events but at complete scenes.In the Academy of Venice are eight large pictures l)yCarpaccio, representing the liistory of St. Ursula.They are rich in motive and character, the figures arechaste, the coloring is clear and bright.
