English: Farmland near Christie House The soil here is a dark fine loam, a legacy of the flooding of the forested land between Britain and the Continent at the end of the last Ice Age. There were many attempts to drain the resultant peaty marshland but it wasn't until the early 17th century that major reclamation work was carried out.
