English: Farmyard, Errigle In the middle is the barn, which used to be a dwelling, there is still a window outline on the wall facing you. The original timber lintol is embedded in the internal wall. This lane used to be part of the main highway leading to Augher, but when the roads were tarred, it was forgotten about and became a lane. At the upper end there was a shop and this would been where people came to purchase goods. To the left is the "Boiler House" where potatoes and mash was boiled in a large metal pot, heated by turf from the bog, to feed to the animals. They ate spuds as well as the humans! The building on the left is where the first byre was located and I can remember a man from the Alfa Laval Company coming to install a milking machine in the milking parlour for the cows. Here too, every year without fail, the swallows would come from Africa to roost in the rafters. Beyond the out-buildings to the left was the haggard, where the rucks of hay were brought from the fields and were built in large hay stacks. Unfortunately my great grandfather met with an in timely death here, having slid down one of them and got impaled in a pitchfork which was placed upright against the side. |
