I should have liked to run in here, partly tosee a little of this interesting island, and partly to inspectthe stores which we knew had been deposited for us hereby the friendly care of Baron von Toll; but time wasprecious, and to the north the sea seemed to lie open tous. On to the north, steadily north, with agood wind, as fast as steam and sail can take us, andopen sea mile after mile, watch after watch, throughthese unknown regions, always clearer and clearer of iceone might almost say ! How long will this last ? The eyealways turns to the northward as one paces the bridge.It is gazing into the future. But there is always thesame dark sky ahead, which means open sea. My planwas standing its test. It seemed as if luck had been onour side ever since the 6th of September. We see4 nothing but clean water, as Henriksen answered fromthe crows-nest when I called up to him.
