making-its slow and majestic entrance. The sun was low to-day ;I did not see it because of banks of cloud in the south, but it still sent its light up over the pale sky. There thefull moon is now reigning, bathing the great ice plain andthe drifting snow in its bright light. How a night suchas this raises ones thoughts! It does not matter ifone has seen the like a thousand times before : it makesthe same solemn impression when it comes again ; onecannot free ones mind from its power. It is like entering-a still, holy temple, where the spirit of nature hoversthrough the place on o-Htterino- silver beams, and the O 1 O O soul must fall clown and adore—adore the infinity of theuniverse. Wednesday, October i7th. We are employed intaking deep-water temperatures. It is a doubtfulpleasure at this time of year. Second Autumn in the Ice. 483 during the observation after it is brought up, so that thewater will not run out of it into the sample bottles, notto mention all the bother there is getting the apparatusready to lower. We are lucky if we do not require totake the whole thing- into the galley every time to thawit. It is slow work ; the temperatures have sometimesto be read by lantern light. The water samples are notso reliable, because they freeze in the lifter. But thethino- can be done, and we must just O-Q on doin- it. O J O O The same easterly wind is blowing, and we are driftingonwards. Our latitude this evening is about 81° 47 N. Thursday, October iSth. I continue taking- the tem-peratures of the water, rather a cool amusement with thethermometer down to — 29° C. (2O2° F. below zero) anda wind blowing. Your fingers are apt to get a little stiffand numb when you have to manipulate the wet orice-covered metal screws with bare hands and haveto read off the thermometer wit
