Description

AN EGYPTIAN PAINTED WOOD MUMMY PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MAN

Depicted with black curling hair, the large eyes framed by thick eye-brows, with a narrow beard and slender moustache above full lips, wearing a white tunic, the reverse with Theodor Graf collection stamp and Vienna stamp: Bunder Demkmalam(t?) Wien, and an old green printed circular framing label: L'art et les Cadres, 218. Fg Saint Honoré, Cadres Tableaux, Wag.06.57, approx 36cm x 17.5cm FOOTNOTES Provenance: French private collection acquired from a deceased French estate in 2013. French private collection, acquired from Galerie Le Veel, Paris, 1950s. Theodor Graf Collection, Germany, with an according stamp on the reverse.

In 1887 Theodor Graf, the German carpet dealer and Coptic textile collector, acquired approximately 330 Romano-Egyptian mummy portraits from el-Rabayat in the Fayum. Many of these portraits were exhibited before being sold in Europe and America.
