Description

An Egyptian encaustic painted and gilt wood mummy portrait of a man Roman Period, circa early 2nd Century A.D. The young man shown in three-quarter profile, his face turned to the front, against a gilded background, some still remaining, wearing a white tunic with mantle, the thick dark hair closely-trimmed and crowned with a golden laurel wreath in added gilt, the facial features sensitively painted with strong black brows, large brown eyes and a long straight nose, the full lips in reddish-pink, with a moustache, 36cm x 20cm FOOTNOTES Provenance: UK private collection. With David Ghezelbash, Paris, 2013. 'H' Collection, France, formed in the 1940s-60s.

There is a portrait of a young man with similarly styled hair, moustache and gilt wreath, dated A.D. 120-130, in The Brooklyn Museum, New York, acc. no. 40.386.
