Summary edit
DescriptionFenimore Art Museum Cooperstown.jpg |
The Fenimore Art Museum, at 5798 NY Route 80 (also known as Lake Road), was built as enimore House in 1932 in the Neo-Georgian style, on the site of James Fenimore Cooper's 19th-century farmhouse. In 1944 it was donated by Stephen Carlton Clark to the New York State Historical Association to hold their collection and be their headquarters, which had previously been located in Ticonderoga, New York. The Association had been founded in 1899 in Lake George, New York as a non-profit organization with the goal of promoting knowledge about the early history of New York State. A separate library building was added to Fenimore House Museum in 1968, and a new wing in 1995 to house its collection of American Indian Art, which is one of the most extensive in the world. In 1999, the museum was renamed the Fenimore Art Museum. The Fenimore Art Museum building is a contributing property to the Cooperstown Historic District. (Sources: [1], [2]) |
