Title
English: Ferry "Hiyu," ca. 1925
Description
English: The ferry "Hiyu" was built in 1924 for the Kitsap County Transportation Company. For many years, the vessel carried passengers and up to twelve automobiles on the run between Fletcher Bay, on Bainbridge Island and Brownsville, on the Kitsap Peninsula. In the 19th century Chinook jargon used by traders, "hiyu" meant "plenty much."

This photo shows the ferry "Hiyu" sometime during the 1920s. In the late 1960s, it was replaced by a larger ferry with the same name.
