Description

Die Festungsruine liegt oberhalb Skt. Goar am Rhein. Erste Anfänge waren im 13. Jhd. eine Zollburg, die Dieter von Katzenelnbogen hier hat bauen lassen. 1570 wurde die Burg von Philipp dem Großmütigen zu einem Renaissanceschloss umgebaut. Zwischen 1657 und 1674 schließlich wurde die Anlage unter Landgraf Ernst von Hessen-Rheinfels-Rotenburg zur Festung ausgebaut.

Im Jahre 1796 zerstörten Französische Revolutionstruppen die Festung. Die Reste wurden an einen Abbruchunternehmer in Skt. Goar verkauft, der daraus einen Steinbruch machte. Die Ruine gehört zum UNESCO-Welterbe Mittelrheintal.
