theTemperance Reform, in whose organized and active ranks heartand conscience led him to an early enlistment, and his fidelityto which no after enlistment served to lessen. His convictionsof its importance, his sense of responsibility, and ever-wakefulconscientiousness, constrained him to work for it, whenever hesaw, or thought he saw, a rightfully available opportunity, or apossibly impressible subject. He was not content, as too manyare, with what the mere example of abstinence may effect, inthis cause. The example, indeed, is much. Argument andappeal go but for little where it is wanting.
