ngs. The reproduction of the portrait of Mademoiselle EvaGonzales, who was a pupil of Manet, is a happy illustrationof one side of his art. It is admirable both in action andexpression. The fair painter is intent upon her work, yet,it not being true that people cannot do two things at once,she is either interested in something that is being said toher, or in thoughts of her own apart from the work she isdoing. The reproduction shows how vivacious is the por-trait, and how well the picture is composed; something alsocan be seen of the breadth yet subtlety of the lighting.The colour is quiet yet rich, the greys, blues, browns, andsober flesh tints are forced out by the black hair, sash, andvase in the picture within the picture, and relieved by thehues of the flowers. A portrait of his sister-in-law, Berthe Morisot, is a finerealisation of mood. It is a portrait ofwhich one instinctively uses the word noble. And, again,not only is the picture humanly lovely and true, it is alsobeautiful as art; the figure and its accessories are well placedwithin the area of the canvas, the light and shade are wellbalanced, the colour is harmonious. Manet, as we have seen, said that an artists sinceritymight look like a protest. It is difficult to think that therewere not, at times, in his art protest and challenge. Anyhow,he met with bitter antagonism. He felt it deeply. He hadhigh spirit, and the opposition spurred him on. But italso exhausted him, and he died, worn out, at the early ageof fifty-one.
