97a FIFTY YEARS SYNE. 97 coroners held inquests over its death. Amid the conflictof verdicts one can easily be made out. It was some-thing like this :— Ah weel, its a pity, but, ye see, wemaun creep afore we gang. It made way for the longer-lived Witness. Sometimes the amenities of civilised life had to bedispensed with. A respected survivor of the earliestband, with one or two others from Dunedin, went on thefirst New Years Day to visit a friend who had taken uphis abode on a section below Port Chalmers. It was along walk, and their disappointment was great whenthey found that their friend was away and the door ofhis hut locked. They had fullest confidence that if theycould only find entrance without breaking door or window,no one would rejoice more on his return than the absentfriend. The hut was low, tiie chimney ditto.
