Summary edit

Description
English: Finial, c. 1200 CE. Gilded copper with champleve enamel plaques; decoration in the form of leaves and fruits, and 6 teardrop-shaped enamel plaques. The finial is topped by an oversized fruit. Possibly from Germany. Victoria and Albert Museum. This finial crowned the gable of a shrine containing relics of a saint. Such finials were usually made of rock crystals of gilded metal. The use of enamel plaques seems to have been a slightly later development.
