Summary edit

Description Fire Barn 5 in Elgin (1903). The first fire department was built in Elgin after a particularly bad fire in 1865. The community quickly embraced the system because of the lower insurance premiums a volunteer fire department would provide for a city. Fire hydrants were installed in 1875. The first professional firefighters in Elgin were hired in the late 1880s to drive the fire engines. The first building in Elgin designed as a fire station opened in January 1889. The fifth fire house was designed by local architect Smith Hoag in a more distinct architectural style than the previous four. After it closed during the Great Depression, it was briefly used as a studio for local sculptor Trygve Rovelstad. It was reopened as a fire house after the economy recovered, and maintained that use until 1991. It is now used as a museum for fire fighting artifacts.
