Description |
English: As the population of Seattle grew, so did the city's schools. The first school was called "Central School," a name that was applied to several different buildings as the original building was outgrown and a subsequent building burned down. In 1900, the older students of Seattle would have attended Seattle High School, located on the third floor of a building now referred to as Central School II. That building had been built in 1889 on 7th Avenue and Madison Street; it was demolished in 1953. This image was taken of the first Girls Basketball Team at Seattle High School. Several of the girls pictured here also played basketball while attending the University of Washington, including Inez (Calhoun) Shaffer (1882-1969), who is kneeling in the center row, the girl farthest on the right. Handwritten on verso: Left to right: Top row: Maude (Crane) Blackwell; Frances Smith; Carrie (Denny) Bamford. 2nd Row: Louise Nichols; Dr. Mabel Seagrave (1882-1935); Mary Anderson; Carrie Eddy (Atkinson) Shorts (1881-1979); Inez (Calhoun) Shaffer. Bottom Row: Essie (Fisher) Oliver; Anna (Brown) Ames; Bess Inglis; Llywelyn Morrison. First Girls Basket Ball Team of the Seattle High School, old Central School, year 1900. Property of Mrs. H. M. Shaffer, 452 Scenic Way, Kent, Wash.
