English: Five Lane Ends, Harby .... a 200 year-old murder scene. Where the Harby - Saxilby road meets Carr Lane and Tom Otter's Lane. The scene of a murder in 1805 when Tom Otter murdered his bride whilst walking home from their wedding http://www.orpheusweb.co.uk/ynnad/tomo.htm. Mary Kirkham from South Hykeham was pregnant with Otter's child and he was forced to marry her by local constables. He was convicted of her murder and hanged in March 1806. His body was gibbetted and hung until 1850 at nearby Gibbet Wood when Edwin Jarvis took the head and leg irons to Doddington Hall where they can still be seen. A gruesome tale ! |
