O leucismo é uma ocorrência genética que deixa parte das penas brancas. O leucismo ocorre em vários animais, muitos deles considerados albinos na verdade são leucístiscos, um verdadeiro albino deve possuir os olhos rosas ou azul-claro. Ao contrário dos albinos, os indivíduos leucísticos apresentam uma resistência à luz solar ligeiramente maior, já que a refletem melhor. Apesar disso os indivíduos raramente sobrevivem por muito tempo, são facilmente avistados por predadores e pelas suas presas que acabam escapando. Quando chegam à idade adulta dificilmente irão se reproduzir porque é normal as fêmeas rejeitarem os leucísticos.
