Summary edit

Description

Old, giant red maple (Acer rubrum) at the Dry Run Picnic Area, Sullivan County, within Loyalsock State Forest.

Red maples are among the most common forest trees in Pennsylvania. Large specimens are rare; the trees are usually logged off before they reach great heights. The tree shown here, easily more than 100 feet (30 meters) tall, was exceptional.
