Summary edit

Description

White birches (Betula papyrifera), Elk County, within Moshannon State Forest.

The birches, now about a century old, arose on fire-scorched, nutrient-depleted soil after the virgin forest at the site was logged off. Few other trees grow here; the birches, as well as the hay-scented ferns that make up the forest understory, are allelopathic—they produce toxins that inhibit the growth of other vegetation.
