John Heckner by Lawrence Crocker, Medford, Oregon Perhaps the name, John Hekcner, means nothing to most of the younger plantsman. It was my pleasure to have known this fine botanist and man of mystery as a friend, and I was fortunate th have had him as my first guide into the mountains of Southern Oregon, where so many rare plant species grow. Since I am one of the few who know his story, I would like to pass it on before it is forgotten. April, 1965 Native Plants Selected Especially for Rock Gardens John H Heckner Collector and Grower Brownsboro, Oregon There are several plants named after Heckner: heck'neri: after John Henry Heckner ( 1882-1938), born of Norwegian immigrant parents, was in Oregon by 1900 where he later farmed in Jackson County. He collected Sedum heckneri in 1931 in Jackson Co., OR and Oreobroma heckneri, probably the same year, in Trinity Co., CA (ref.
