Title
Flower basket quilt
Description
Quilt with green baskets containing flowers of red, gold and pink, green swag border with gold and red swag support alternating; discoloration between baskets possibly stains from wood storage container.; Red, pink and green quilts were very popular from the 1840s through the 1850s. In addition to this pleasing color arrangement, the design and workmanship on this quilt are excellent. The flower baskets and swag border are appliquéd onto the white cotton background. Quilting is very fine diagonal lines. Sarah Lair married Richard Thomas, a furniture maker, and lived in the Monmouth, Illinois area. The quilt was given to Sarah’s brother, Matthias, who lived in Connersville, Indiana, and it passed down in the family to Mary Jane Bruhn. Size is 87” x 87.”
