s is thought to be the centre of the richestgold-producing district in the world. Beechworth, onehundred and seventy miles northeast of Melbourne, at anelevation higher than that of Ballarat, is nearly as populous,and as prolific in the precious metal. The diggings ofMaryborough district, situated a hundred and fifty milesnorthwest of Melbourne, are famous, and give occupationto some eight thousand miners. Castlemaine, seventy-fivemiles north of the capital, has proved very profitable in itsyield of gold. Nearly forty square miles of gold-bearinglands are being worked by Europeans and Chinese in thedistrict of Ararat, a hundred and fifty miles north of Mel-bourne. From these several sources of mineral wealththere flows constantly towards the capital a stream ofriches, making it probably the greatest gold-producingcentre on the globe.
