Description
English: Footbridge across the Nottingham Canal. The Nottingham Canal was built along the 60 metre contour for much of its length, a common construction method which led to the meandering nature of these waterways across the countryside, but the sharp change in the land profile here would have added at least a kilometre to the journey with an awkward turn. To circumvent this at this point, the canal was built on a man made ridge which also avoided locked changes in level. Dead Lane which runs beyond the hedge on the opposite side of the water, the main route between Trowell and Cossall, is about 5 metres lower than the canal here. See 815877 for a view of Dead Lane approaching this point and 815835 for the view looking in the other direction. Further investigation of the OS 1:25,000 map will reveal that 809900, a branch of the canal which used to serve a small mine actually follows the 60 metre contour.
