| Description |
Fort Augustus and Loch Ness. Two large canal and loch cruisers, 'Spirit of Scotland' and 'Scottish Highlander', have descended the lock flight at Fort Augustus and are awaiting access to Loch Ness. This can only be achieved when the A82 bridge over the canal has been closed to road traffic and swung clear. The Caledonian Canal was completed in 1822 to the design of Thomas Telford and links Inverness on the east coast of Scotland with Corpach (near Fort William) on the west coast. Only about twenty miles of the sixty mile route needed to be constructed as it passes through Loch Lochy, Loch Oich, Loch Dochfour and Loch Ness, all formed in the geological fault known as the Great Glen. In addition to the eight locks of 'Neptune's Staircase' at Banavie in the west, there are twenty-one others, plus ten bridges and four aqueducts. |
