II fait face a la citadelle du Château d'Oléron a 3,5 km de celle-ci et permettra de croiser les tirs de canons pour verrouiller l'accès sud a la rade de Rochefort. II participe

a la protection du grand Arsenal du Ponant édifié en 1666 au fond de l'estuaire de la Charente.
