Description

Após a restauração da independência em 1640 e face à necessidade de defesa das nossas costas dos ataques espanhóis e corsários foram edificadas uma série de fortalezas junto ao mar. Em Leça da Palmeira foi construída a fortaleza de Nossa Senhora das Neves que, juntamente com os fortes de S. João da Foz e de S. Francisco Xavier (Castelo do Queijo) integrava a linha de defesa da cidade do Porto.

É um forte de tipo abaluartado com planta de estrela de quatro pontas, protegidas por muralhas inclinadas e guaritas salientes. O início da sua edificação data de 1651, substituindo assim uma outra fortificação mais antiga e mais pequena, situada a pouca distância deste e cuja construção se tinha iniciado em 1638.

Perdida a sua função militar aí se instalou em 1844 a Alfândega do Porto e, em 1899, a secretaria do Porto de Leixões. Hoje é a sede da capitania daquele porto.

Está classificado como Imóvel de Interesse Público pelo Decreto 44075 DG 281 de 5 de dezembro de 1961. <a href="http://www.cm-matosinhos.pt/pages/562?poi_id=55" rel="nofollow">www.cm-matosinhos.pt/pages/562?poi_id=55</a>
